About The Smiley Kitchen

Your Smiley Baker/Cook/Blogger: Elle Kay

I very much enjoy cooking, baking and cake decorating – but am learning as I go. If it weren’t for cooking education found on the internet and the TLC Network, I would honestly eat grilled cheese every night. My culinary inspirations are Cake Boss, Gordon Ramsay, the Martha Stewart website and many various recipe websites who send me periodic emails. If a recipe looks yummy and something I could possibly execute, I am easily inspired and will give it a shot. I am neither novice nor expert when it comes to the kitchen, but I try very hard to make delicious dishes and beautiful cakes and am blogging along the way. Who knows? Maybe you’ll learn something from my blog! Also, please feel free to drop some knowledge on me if I’m doing something wrong! (very possible)

The Smilies

I began collecting smiley-faced items sometime during college. And as you collectors know, once you begin a collection of novelty-themed items such as smiley faces, Hello Kitty, turtles, etc… EVERYONE gives you gifts bearing your new signature.  I had so many things with happy faces on them, I had to throw away a whole bunch in my mid-20s. The remainder of smiley items now reside in my kitchen (and a little bit into the bathroom too since it’s right off the kitchen). I still receive birthday cards, jewelry and other miscellaneous items (including kitchen utensils!) from family and friends that beam that never-failing smile. It’s become a part of me, really. I’m very glad my apartment came with pale yellow walls!

Cake Decorating

While in my early 30s, I began taking an interest in making fun cakes. I didn’t know the basic flower-making, but if I saw a photo in a Betty Crocker email of a Lego cake made with marshmallow tops – I would definitely make the effort to create this cake for someone who likes Legos. When my favorite television series, Lost, came to a close, the group I was watching the show with had a party. The creative girl in me really wanted to make a Lost-themed cake and so I spent 2 days constructing a cake-representation of the first episode. I never watched those cake shows on T.V. at that time, but soon began taking a greater interest. I am awed at some of the art that is created on those shows! In May of 2011, I signed up for cake decorating classes and will blog my learnings here. It’s not as hard as I thought and I often surprise myself. My goal is to be as perfect as Cake Boss someday!

The Recipe Box

My recipe box came from eBay and arrived with recipes already in them. After reading every one of them, my boyfriend and I came to the conclusion that the former owner was an older woman… perhaps from the southern states. I shared the contents of the recipe box with my mother and she took many of the dried fruit and fish recipes (yuck!) for herself. As I experiment with the remainder of recipes, you will find the details and full review of each in The Recipe Box section of this blog. My boyfriend and I have named her Mildred… just because.  I’ll also be including other recipes that I usually obtain from the internet. The newest posts will be in the Blog section of this site, but every recipe will be tucked safely away into the archives of my recipe box.
